Wan Junaidi: Cops arrest gangs not based on race

THE arrest of people suspected to be involved in gangsterism has got nothing to do with their ethnicity, says Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

“The police do not arrest people based on their race, but on evidence that they are involved in triads,” he told Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (BN-Sabak Bernam).

On the arrests of people suspected to be involved in gangsterism so far, Wan Junaidi said 425,016 were Malays, 190,803 were Chinese, while 131,420 were Indians.

A total of 27, 217 suspects were from other races including natives from Sabah and Sarawak.

Wan Junaidi said fights between gangsters have been occurring lately because the former detainees of the repealed Emergency Ordinance were trying to reclaim their territories which were controlled by others.

On Malaysia’s prison system, Wan Junaidi said the country’s prisons are among the best in the world as it adhered to the United Nations convention on prisoners.

“We have implemented rehabilitation programmes for inmates based on the convention,” he said.

“For example, over 100 inmates have received degrees and even doctorates while in prison under the rehabilitation programme.”

On another matter, Wan Junaidi said enforcement authorities have increased their patrols along the Malaysian border areas during the on-going anti-crime operations.

Wan Junaidi said the police had also sent a list of suspects who were given restriction orders to the Immigration officers stationed at local airports to prevent them from leaving the country
